Schnazz sign new keeper

Schnazz have finally signed a full-time keeper after rookie Nyall Dawson exercised the escape clause on his contract.

The recent defensive form of Schnazz has been anything but good, and so captain Matt Winzenried has moved to end the part-time goalkeeping nightmare by signing talented rookie Aaron Elbourne. Elbourne has already demostrated his talents during a training session, and it was not a large step for Schnazz to make him an offer that he couldn't refuse (the chance to win an SRA T-shirt!).

Previously Elbourne's CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) has kept him out of the team, but it is this very factor that will make him invaluable to Schnazz - mainly because it means that he is quite happy to play as a full-time goalkeeper.

Elbourne is expected to make his debut against Posh Spice Ex's on Tuesday 24th August.

Tuesday 17th August:
Another Loss

In an effort to strengthen the alarmingly fragile Schnazz defence, captain Matt Winzenried cast himself in the role of right back for last Tuesday's performance of "Allegedly Soccer".

Unfortunately it was not particularly a matinee to remember, with the first Wog Boys goal being scored only 3 minutes after kick-off. Although the Schnazz defence was indeed much improved, FC Wog Boys went two up in the ninth minute after an error by fill-in goalkeeper Martin Buden allowed a shot from a preposterous angle to bury itself in the back of the net.

While Schnazz did have several chances to score in the second half, they failed to capitalise on them. When left back Olaf Rutgrink played the ball inside the goalsquare and Wog Boys converted the penalty the game was pretty much all over. 3-0 to FC Wog Boys.

After the game Matt was positive about the result.

"Apart from those three stupid defensive errors we played quite well, so our job from here on is to make sure that stupid errors do not occur again. The return of sweeper Dave Waddell [on loan to the education department], and my addition to the defence will provide the strength and experience that has been lacking in the past three games."

Tuesday 10th August:
A draw!

The recent absence of Nathan Patterson and Dave Waddell has left a large hole in the Schnazz defence, and this factor was responsible for giving The Sarma-Boys a flyer of a start. Although the Schnazz back three improved as the game progressed, half-time saw them down 2-0.

The second half saw forward Paul Michailidis step up a gear, and his clever cross to Matt Winzenried resulted in the first Schnazz goal of the season. Olaf Rutgrink began to assert himself as an attacking presence in the game, and a clever run down the wing allowed him to pass the ball of the back wall to the waiting Paul Michailidis, who hammered home from close range to equalise in the 16th minute.

The Sarma-Boys replied swiftly though, going ahead only a minute later through some clever attacking play. Schnazz fought back hard, and in the 19th minute a sweet through ball from Matt Winzenried found the forward Paul Michailidis, who turned on his man and blasted the ball past the helpless keeper for his second of the game.

Both teams had several more chances to take all three points, but in the end the score remained 3-3.

Tuesday 3rd August:
Ouch!

The first game of our season began yesterday, and we were hoping to exact revenge from Diablos, the team who put us out of finals contention last year by beating us 3-2 in an end of season thriller.

Unfortunately this game wasn't so close. With defensive stalwarts Dave Waddell and Nathan Patterson unavailable, and rookie goalkeeper Nyall Dawson absent-minded (yes everyone - he FORGOT to come... feel free to email him at [email protected] and tell him he's a twit!), veteran substitute Dave Lister and rookie wingback Nat Kitingan were forced to step into the defensive breach. Olaf Rutgrink (with an injured foot) kept goal in Nyall's place. Andrew Winzenried started at centre back, Matt Winzenried in midfield and Martin Buden up forward.

The game started with Schnazz showing there customary determination, but as the game progressed Diablos were increasingly able to exploit the defensive weaknesses, and the frequent shots on goal showed up Olaf's goalkeeping inexperience. It was about five minutes in when they scored first, and the rest of the first half was a nightmare. Fortunately Diablos were not in good penalty taking touch, or we would have been down 4-0 at the break. As it was, the 3-0 score at half time was not flattering.

Although Diablos scored their fourth early, the second half saw the Schnazz back three consolidating, and the team settled down to play properly. Several chances were created up forward, and Martin Buden was only denied a consolation goal in the 17th minute by a brilliant save from the Diablos keeper.

All in all a frustrating, disappointing game to begin the season. Fortunately we still have seven games to go!

New name for Dockers

Name change - a name change?

The team formerly known as the Burnie Dockers has defied the traditions of six illustrious seasons in the Lunchtime Sports Competition at Monash University by changing it's name to "Schnazz". This change comes in the wake of a changing of the guard for the Dockers. Captain Matt Winzenried, the only member of the original Dockers squad, agrees with the name change.

"The name "Burnie Dockers" is more identified with the older generation of players - especially the name's creator, Timmy Rae. This new generation of players don't understand the significance of the older name, and I think that they deserve to have a name that they identify with."

After a lengthy gleaning of name ideas from last semester's squad (which came up with few suggestions), Martin Buden's "Schnazz" was chosen to lead the team into the new millenium, ahead of such suggestions as "Funky Chicken F.C", "Barbie Dockers" and "Burnie Teletubbies". We can only be thankful.

In the meantime, updating this website is a graphical nightmare.
